A Babywearing Story – Amanda and Grace
My journey with babywearing began when we learned we were pregnant last July. I knew what felt natural to me when it came to having a baby. Babywearing was on that list, along with breastfeeding and co-sleeping.
I began looking for local groups to learn more. I found Babywearing International, and attended one of their meetings. I experimented with a few carriers and felt a wrap was best suited for me as a first-time mom. I began with a stretchy wrap, which I received from a friend as a gift. A few videos on YouTube helped me practice wrapping until I felt confident wearing our newborn.
When our daughter was two weeks old, I began wearing her around the house. By six weeks, we were at the rodeo.
Babywearing has been a beautiful experience in so many ways. I’m able to comfort our daughter when she needs to be held or needs a good nap (she’s slept up to three hours with me). Babywearing helps us during a growth spurt, getting things done around the house, and when I need to get out for a walk.
I love being able to help her feel better when she is fussy and tired, but isn’t ready to sleep alone for every nap. I appreciate being able to get out of the house and walk for a few miles. During our walk, I will check our mail and catch up on phone calls. Since she is currently in a stage that needs more holding and soothing, I’m able to prepare meals, eat, do laundry, use the restroom, and work around the house – all while wearing her.
My favorite aspect of babywearing is the bonding my daughter and I get to have. She is next to her mama, where she wants to be, and I have her next to my heart.
There truly is no better place for both of us to be.
With the simple act of helping her relax and fall asleep next to me, I’m able to reassure her she’s safe and loved. Having her wrapped with me, helps me learn and understand who she is as a tiny person. I believe her to be a unique individual, even at such a young age. Being so close to her, teaches me so many things about her.
I absolutely love babywearing our daughter and look forward to many more months of being next to her.
