Boba Air | Blue | Soft Structured Carrier SSC | Review

This carrier is:

  • Boba brand.
  • Air is the name the manufacturer has given this style of carrier.
  • Soft structured carrier (SSC), sometimes called a buckle carrier.
  • 100% nylon.
  • Blue is the name of the color the manufacturer has given this colorway. I would call it purple with lime green accents.

Words I would use to describe this carrier:

  • small
  • thin
  • breathable
  • light
  • compact
  • scratchy
  • uncomfortable
  • cheap

Boba’s website describes the Boba Air:

  • Light-as-air soft-structured baby carrier (just 0.7 pounds)
  • Folds up in seconds into self-storing hood pouch
  • Fits in small spaces for easy travel and storage
  • Lightweight yet durable nylon material
  • Safe, sturdy and excellently ergonomic

I’ve tried on the Boba Air a few times, and just can’t get on board with it. It is so uncomfortable to wear, and the nylon webbing is particularly rough and scratchy on my skin.

It could be useful as a water carrier, since it’s 100% nylon. It could be useful as an emergency car carrier or diaper bag carrier, since it folds up compact into its own pocket, and is extremely lightweight.

It isn’t supportive. It isn’t comfortable. In fact, it’s almost instantly painful for me to wear. I can’t imagine having it be my one and only baby carrier. Given that for its price point something much more useful and comfortable could be purchased, I just can’t get along with the Boba Air.

The fact they are still in production tells me someone does indeed find this carrier useful. If you are one of those folks – please leave a review here and let us know how it works for you!

The body panel fits relatively small, and is not adjustable. It would probably fit around 5-12 months old, depending on the size of the child. It is too small for a toddler, and too big for a newborn.

The nylon fabric is very light, breathable, and silky feeling. It is extremely thin. The black webbing and black binding along the edges of the shoulder straps is rough and scratchy.

The body panel is contoured, and not adjustable in size. It is made from two layers of fabric. It has seat darts. I would be concerned it might press into my baby’s chunky thighs if I wore him for an extended time.

15″ wide at legs out including seat darts

14″ tall at shoulder 15″ tall at top of arch

The waistband is two layers of nylon fabric, completely unpadded. It is contoured, but since there’s no padding, it does not hold its shape, and ends up as one crunched up band around the waist.

25″ fabric, double layer, no padding

13″ and 14″ webbing 3″ buckles

webbing 2″ wide

5″ tall tapers to 2″

Contoured, three layers of fabric, unpadded. The chest clip is attached to a curved metal rod that goes part way along the strap. The shape of the shoulder strap is awkward, and the weight of the baby ends up concentrating in that tiny metal band. Instead of feeling the width of the strap on my shoulder, I felt the pressure of that metal rod. The strap edges are held together with black binding that is rough and scratchy. The strap can be adjusted larger or smaller, but does not have a buckle to unclip it completely.

21″ fabric

20″ webbing that is 1″ wide

4″ wide at widest point, tapers to 3″ wide on either side

The hood is flat, one layer of fabric, and has elastic on the sides to gather it. The hood can be shoved inside the pocket on the body to keep it out of the way when not in use. The hood is permanently attached.

10″ wide

10″ tall unstretched, 14″ tall stretched

7″ reach straps with snaps

A zippered pocket on the outside of the body panel can hold the hood, or can hold the entire carrier folded up inside. Toss the little bundle in your glove box, diaper bag, or stroller, and it will be light and compact.

10″ wide

5″ tall

3″ deep
